Hello, hello! I am thrilled to be mentoring YA again this year! For those who aren’t familiar, Pitch Wars is a mentoring program where published/agented authors, editors, or industry interns choose one mentee to work with on a specific manuscript for an agent showcase!
A Little About Me
I write about heart-stopping romance, rule-breaking heroes, and everyday magic. I live in Ohio (where the weather is never quite right). My BFA in Photography and Graphic Design has granted me a wide assortment of creative knowledge that serves mostly as inspiration. When I'm not crafting stories, you’ll likely find me spending waaay too much time on Pinterest, gaming, or performing in a burlesque show—because I enjoy giving my introversion a worthy adversary. (Plus, it’s the closest to Broadway I'll ever get.) My new adult debut was released in 2017 from Entangled Embrace. I have three more novels releasing with Entangled Teen within the next year.
I'm represented by the wonderful Naomi Davis of Bookends Literary.
THE HEARTBEAT HYPOTHESIS is new adult, and is about Audra, a heart transplant recipient who chooses to honor her donor's memory by recreating her Done-It list (AKA an anti-bucket list). Audra enlists her donor's brother, Jake, to help photograph the recreated list—but he's not interested in helping unravel the mystery behind his sister's death.
TO WHATEVER END is about a girl who's cursed with the ability to see the end to all her relationships. With one touch, she sees a death she simply cannot ignore. Not this time. Not when, dying in her arms, Griffin whispers three simple words that change everything. Even if Quinn can’t change the future, can’t save him, she at least has to try. Even if it means taking the bullet meant for him.
PROJECT A.I.D.E.N. is the first in a two-book series that follows Aiden, the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics lab’s greatest creation–until they demand his destruction. With nothing more than a stolen gun and titanium bones, he escapes and meets Eva, who’s willing to help. What he doesn’t know is her father’s the head of AIR—and she’s not spilling that secret to the sweet, haunted boy. Now on the run from the only home he’s ever known, Aiden must decide what’s worse: endangering Eva’s life, or losing his own.
What To Expect From Me as a Mentor
This will be my third year mentoring. Every year is an amazing experience, and I'm SO stoked you're even reading this! In 2016, I was a mentee. It was the most gratifying few months for me, and I love helping someone else the way my mentor helped me. I even managed to land my awesome agent with my Pitch Wars novel. Sure, it took six more months and a whole lot of no's, but it happened. My 2018 mentee even found an agent! I've been on most sides of the fence as far as writing and contests go, so I feel like I can offer a broad, open-minded POV.
With my varied experiences, you’ll get plenty of revisions, big and small. We’ll find those pesky plot holes and inconsistencies. Maybe it’s your dialogue or character development that needs help. Or maybe you need to up the romance. (That’s one of my specialties.) Whether you need to cut characters or change your entire ending, I'll be here to guide the way. And of course your story will always be your story. I would never force changes on you. I hope to have open and honest conversations. We'll brainstorm. We'll laugh. We'll work so hard and have all the fun!
Oh, and we’ll find those misplaced commas if it kills us! ;)
Together, we'll make your query and manuscript shine! I'm huge on communication, so you’ll be able to email or text at any time. I'll be there for 2am freakouts and moments of despair! We can have video chats or phone calls, too. I truly hope to form a long lasting relationship with my mentee. Those are the best, after all.
What I Expect From My Mentee
Expect to work. HARD. And have fun. I promise we can do both!
An everlasting writer friendship would be icing on the Pitch Wars cake. But at a basic level, I expect my mentee to be open to whatever feedback and suggestions I offer, and for she, he, and them to value honesty and hard work. I intend to to hold myself to those characteristics, and only hope to honor and elevate the art you’ve created.
I expect you to meet deadlines. Sure, there are always exceptions, but that's where communication comes in! I intend to make the most out of our months together. You should too.
Yes, it will be a lot of work. Yes, there will be hard days. There might even be tears. Expect that. Embrace it. But know I'll be here with you through Pitch Wars and beyond.
My Wish List
I am looking for SFF romance!
I am not looking for contemporary.
Let's break it down...
Give me all your swoon-worthy romance, tortured heroes, witty banter, and plot twists that make me go WHOA.
I love a story that explores the darker aspects of humanity - so if your story is gritty, dark, and dangerous, send it my way!
I also love a fabulous anti-hero, enemies to lovers story, or a spectacular love triangle.
I flipping love magical realism! It's utterly awesome in that you can do whatever the hell you damn well please - so long as your execution is on point.
For science fiction and fantasy stories, I prefer a heavy grounding in the real world. Aside from my obvious love of artificial intelligence, I'm a huge fan of alternate universes, sexy aliens, time travel, and stories about what happens when that line of science goes just a bit too far - whether it be in a good or bad way.
Remember. I do require at romance plot in your manuscript. Don’t get me wrong, I love tons of stories with no romance, but I'll be a better mentor for something with some kissing and swooning. ;) The romance must be an integral part of the plot, but doesn't have to be the main plot. Basically ask yourself this question: if I take out the romance, does this still resemble a story? If the answer is yes, then there's NOT enough romance for my wish list this year.
I am accepting NA, though I will likely ask you to age it down. I can give you all the nasty details of my NA debut struggles later. :)
As far as the writing style itself, I'm especially keen on a lyrical/poetic tone; think Nova Ren Suma and Lauren Oliver.
I like diverse characters. (I'm especially interested in characters struggling with mental illnesses.)
Bonus points if you can rip my heart out then mash it back together, all while making me cry.
I do not want:
A Few of My Favorite Books
The Catastrophic History of You and Me by Jess Rothenberg
The Walls Around Us by Nova Ren Suma
Imaginary Girls by Nova Ren Suma
Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver
Delirium by Lauren Oliver
Undead Girl Gang by Lily Anderson
Obsidian (The Lux Series) by Jennifer L. Armentrout - basically all of her SFF romance.
Unraveling by Elizabeth Norris
Infinity (The Infinity Division) by Jus Accardo
They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera
I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson
Soul Screamers by Rachel Vincent
